  • GeoNjules: the green patches are from the algae in their swimming pools. Algae that enters hollow spaces in the bears' "white" fur is the reason for the appearance. The algae growth usually subsides as the weather turns colder.

  • When is the New Great Bear Wilderness exhibit at Brookfield Zoo scheduled to open?

  • Thanks for sharing this.

I went to BZ for Bear Awareness Weekend on Sunday. I loved seeing all the bears, especially Hudson. All of the polars posed for me, the grizzlies were fun to watch, and I took some good photos of the sloth bear. I love this event. The zoo should do it again.

  • MeiLover101: Thanks...we hope to do it every year but we like to think we have Bear Awareness every day here! Great Bear Wilderness will open in May 2010 and there will be new underwater viewing windows for the polar bears and the brown bears. Stay tuned for updates as the exhibit gets closer to completion!

  • The main reason is that he is the youngest bear in our exhibits. Hudson was born at Brookfield Zoo on Dec. 14, 2006, and his parents are Aussie and Arki, both still at Brookfield Zoo. Hudson is still just a big kid really, and he has a lot of energy, just like most youngsters!

  • Very nice. Does anyone know why there were patches of green on one polar bear this summer? I was thinking it had to do with the vetenarian.

  • The polar bear is the best one. He's always active and playing. Is there any reason he's less dormant than the others?
