Brazilian state championship games often seem to be heated affairs. Soccer clubs play for local bragging rights, and sometimes their players take things too far ... way too far.


A recent second-division Paulista state championship game between Fernandopolis and Votuporanguense ended in chaos, as a mass brawl led to injuries and 12 (yes, 12) red cards.


Ten minutes of mayhem started after a Votuporanguense striker was taken down by the opposing goalkeeper. The referee did the right thing, and sent off the goalkeeper.


We're not sure what sparked the brawl, as the video cut to the chase scene. One Fernandopolis player, No. 5, was being pursued by members of the opposing team, and he launched the first of many flying spin-kicks. He even landed a punch on one of his would-be attackers.


What he said or did to have the whole Votuporanguense chasing after him is unknown. But number five was caught in the end. Votuporanguense players managed to trip him up and land a couple of well-placed kicks to the ribs, before number five's teammates stepped in and saved their injured teammate. The number five has threatened to take legal action against his attackers, Dirty Tackle reports.


After the chaos, the referee showed red cards to 11 more players. Youth and reserve team players from both clubs should get ready to play in the coming weeks. They'll be needed. Watch the brawl between Fernandopolis and Votuporanguense in the video above.
