Rogue businessman George Speight and seven masked gunmen stormed the Fiji Parliament on 19 May 2000 and held the elected government of Prime Minister Mahendra Chaudhry hostage for 56 days. University of the South Pacific journalism students covered the crisis. This video tells the story of their coverage on Pacific Journalism Online for the first 10 days - until the university temporarily shut down their website on May 29. Their coverage continued on the University of Technology, Sydney, journalism website. In December 2000, the USP students and Pacific Journalism Online were awarded the the coveted Dr Charles Stuart Prize at the annual Ossie Awards for student journalism in Australia.
