Cormorants and cormorant aquatic birds belonging to the family and relatives of falacrocoracidi boobies, frigate birds and pelicans. Nest on the coasts of temperate and tropical regions around the world and in some inland waters, in swamps and at the mouths of rivers.
PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: The cormorants have a slim body, up to 90 cm long, ending in a beak strong hook and a small bag gulare similar to that of pelicans. The neck is long and the tail is flexible and rigid. The plumage is glossy black, with white parts in some species. Many rings have bare skin, bright colors around the eyes. As waterfowl, cormorants have legs with webbed feet. Their feathers are also not fully sealed like other birds through this feature does not hold air and allow for more efficient swimming and diving. To catch the fish they eat, in fact, cormorants dive and swim in water too deep.
REPRESENTATIVE SPECIES: The pygmy cormorant municipality or the Old World (Phalacrocorax carbo) is a Eurasian species, can measure 90 cm in length and playing near the coast, building nests of algae on the rocks and lays from three to four eggs heavenly. It is present in Italy, especially in inland waters. Its range extends across the northern Atlantic Ocean to North America. The pygmy cormorant (Phalacrocorax pygmaeus), another Eurasian species, only 48 cm long, devoid of showy white feathers on the throat, the common characteristic of the cormorant, and its distribution area is restricted by the marshes and reeds in Eastern Europe. Another species common on European coasts, including those of the Mediterranean Sea, is the shag (Phalacrocorax Aristotelis) smaller than the common cormorant, has a black color, generally uniform and a ridge that appears only in the wedding color scheme.
The most common North American species is the pygmy from the double ridge (Phalacrocorax auritus), which is living on the Atlantic coast on both the Pacific and can be seen even in the inner regions. Two other species are confined to the Pacific coast: the Bougainville cormorant (Phalacrocorax bougainvillea) is an important member of the seabird colonies of the Chilean and Peruvian coasts, producing guano as a fertilizert
The common cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) and the species Phalacrocorax capillatus some Asian populations are trained to catch fish in exchange for a food reward. In order to prevent them swallow their prey is close the neck with a ring or a belt and, in some cases, water is recovered with a rope tied to its leg.
