The Canción is a Spanish dance-song. In this movement there are several pauses to add drama and feeling. The contrasting B section is labeled as Yaravi, which is one of the oldest musical genres that still exists in Peru. It expresses melancholy, sadness, and pain. This style is also sung, rather than danced. Traditionally, women sing their highest pitch, which may be presented by the preceding fermata in the flute.
