I met Barret when he was with the Dukesof Dixieland in the 60's. bought a snare drum from him off the stage. He was a great guy. told me how he was on the road when his wife died. He loved her deeply but kept playing that night's gig. he inspired my own playing for a long time. He lived a ton of history from a time long gone. God bless him
I owned a Coffee Shop in the hotel where Barrett Deems lived. He was sweet, kind, quiet and crazy. He used to beat on the counter with spoons and I would tell him to shut up. I didn't know who he was in those days. Had I known, I would have bought a drum set and put it up in a corner near the window.... Barrett was OK in my book. Never arrogant or aloof, just in his under-the-blanket world.
@Tony7840: This was quoted from the Buddy Rich biography. According to it, after saying this, they changed the advertisement to "World's Fastest Drummer", which they then added "which still wasn't true". Not claiming to know everything, but assuming the book wouldn't lie.
"BrandMan211"..Beg your pardon, but Barett Deems was advertised as the "World's FASTEST" Drummer," at the "Brass Rail" in Chicago, 1958. NOT the "GREATEST." Please, get your FACTS straight.. How do I know? Appeared there with Jimmy Isle band at the same time. Barrett, unfortunately, was one of the most Narcisstic, arrogant musicians that I had NOT had the pleasure of making an acquaintance with. Sorry, folks. What an A*****e!!!!!!
I feel very fortunate to have had the chance to talk with him and later meet him in Chicago on of days, John Coltrane's 69th Birthday, September 23, 1995. I later saw him perform at what was certainly one his last performances, an outdoor concert, in late summer 1998. He still had a great sound, though he had to have the relief drummer fill in for the second half of the performance.
Buddy "had gone to see drummer Barrett Deems in a little club in Chicago. A sign outside the club proclaimed that Barrett was the "World's Greatest Drummer." Before Barrett even took the stand that night, Buddy walked up to him, g...ave him "the look", and said, in carefully measured tones: "The-world's-greatest-drummer?""

Deems was not in Rich's league.
Buddy's artistry, drive and body-of-work speaks for itself.
I befriended a gentleman who played with both drummers. I was duly informed that Rich was the far superior player.

By all accounts, Barrett was real character. Any Barrett stories?
