Intifada - It is often used as a term for popular resistance to oppression. Its current Arabic meaning during the first Palestinian uprising in the late 1980s and early 1990s"
Robin Shulman (August 24, 2007). Washington Post Dr. Kopplin again challenges the conventions of Jazz commonality. From his days traveling in Israel and the Middle East, he was struck by the tension between the numerous cultures that share such a small geographic area. Coupled with his driving desire to impart to his students the NEED to acknowledge the innate humanity of Music and its relationship to all the Worlds cultures. With the help of Mr. Alex Budman, tonights Guest Artist and longtime friend and musician, Dr. Kopplin defies convention and asks his Students to help express the Good News that in spite of our differences, all peoples can come together in the end.
Alex Budman is an active musician of 20 years with performing experience on all saxophones, clarinets, flutes, electric and acoustic basses. His versatility has allowed him to perform and record with a wide range of artists including Liza Minnelli, Rosemary Clooney, Erykah Badu, The Game, Boz Scaggs, Eric Clapton, Bettye LaVette, The Funk Brothers, Wendy and Lisa, Busta Rhymes, Jesús Díaz, Glide Memorial Church Band and the San Jose Symphony. http://www.alexbudman.com Mr. Budman can be seen on his Website http://www.alexbudman.com and on MySpace.com Award-winning soloist James Goese (soprano sax) and Alex Budman (clarinet) exemplify the indifference between cultures by playing a duet that is NOT dependent upon each other. In the background and refrains, you hear the many sounds of the living Middle East. Award-winning Jeanette Jeena E Lawler (bongos) provides the underlying Heartbeat of Mankind. If she were to stop, then Mankind dies. While she plays, Mankind still lives, in spite of itself. Ms. Lawler (bongos) and Dr. Kopplin (djembe drum) show Confrontation. Each is pushing their own point, style and method at the other. Looks familiar (Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Palestine, etc.), doesnt it? Who says Jazz isnt Relevant? Jazz is Life! The big finish is when all the chaos and discord comes together to a single unified Chord, Dr. Kopplins wish for a harmonious World (no pun intended...or was it?). HEY! ALL THIS FOR ONLY 7 BUCKS!
