"I don't know that there's a time span", great answer. Good artist. Interesting comment on why she switched to a larger format. I wonder what she's been painting lately...Reminds me a little of T. Noskovsky.
I had the pleasure of attending art classes with Cynthia when we were in high school. Even then, Cynthia could never really explain her work without becoming perturbed with the words. It was more like her work was the explanation and you'd better just take it for what it is. I didn't quite get it back then, but I really wish I did. I was wordy and precise. She was arty and free. It's a wonder we ever became friends. She spoke with her hands even back then. I'm still gobsmacked, 30 years hence.
you should get more artists to talk about their work, watching her move her hands as she speaks in front of the painting is fantastic. i know that's asking alot, her generosity towards you is refreshingly nice!!! thank you.
James, great interview and inrtriguing work. Hartling's work reminds me of Helen Frankenthaler a bit, too. And as soon as she mentioned Hoffman, I could see the play between the ground and space. I think larger pieces would be a challenge for Hartling, but could ultimately prove a very good space for her expression.
I Enjoyed... Alwayz looking to learn
