Hit & Run Outrage
China Double Hit-and-Run:
* Mother at bedside of 2-year-old victim
* Nation grappling with questions about moral decline

---
Rosemary Church:

Well, the world has been stunned by the story of a toddler run down by two hit-and-run drivers in Southern China. The little girl's now in a hospital bed, clinging to life, as the nation grapples with questions about moral decline in a fast-changing society.

Our Eunice Yoon went to check on the girl's condition and to speak with her family and friends.

Eunice Yoon:

A limp body, barely recognizable, at this hospital in southern China, her mother hoping two-year-old Wang Yue might wake if she calls her name. Qu Feifei has barely slept since her daughter was critically injured in not one, but two hit-and-run accidents. "Yueyue won't disappoint everyone," she says, "I know my girl. She's strong."

A security camera in this bustling hardware market caught the accidents on tape. The footage shows the little girl wandering in front of a white van. She's hit, run over and run over again by another vehicle. The video was posted online, outraging the public, but these are the scenes that sparked nation-wide soul-searching: Over a dozen pedestrians, motorists and bikers pass by the bleeding child and do nothing.

"The hit-and-run accidents happened here, in an alleyway near Wang's father's hardware store. She lay on the ground for about ten minutes before a good samaritan moved her here, to safety. Chen Xianmei was that unexpected hero - a street scavenger who stepped in to save a life, now a symbol of understated decency, a quality many fear is increasingly rare in a nation obsessed with moving up the economic ladder." "I didn't think of anything at the time," she told local reporters. "I just wanted to save the girl." Chen's neighbours told us she appeared overwhelmed by her instant celibrity and has since gone home to the countryside.

"Granny Chen represents the best part of human nature," Qu says, "I thank her for that."

Wang Yue is still very much in critical condition. Her mother says that she has some sensation in her lower body, but she has very little brain activity. Despite the concerns of China's declining morality, here at the hospital, humanity shines. During our short visit, Wang's family received a steady procession of well-wishers bearing gifts, money and comfort for someone they never knew. Wang's mother appreciates the support, but is hoping to receive the best gift of all. "Don't give up on Mom," she tells her girl, "Mom is not giving up. Let Mom have one more chance to love and spoil you."

  • They didn't help her because they COWARDS! Plain and simple.

  • I can understand the outrage this has caused and agree that it is a major tragedy, but to say an entire race is evil or bad because of this is ludicrous. Also, for those of you that think this doesn't happen in the US or other westernized country needs to get out more. Just because you didn't see this sorta thing happen doesn't mean it didn't. RIP little girl. :o(

  • I'm Chinese and I would have helped the poor girl :'(

  • @jerrybake458 If they are all so bad then how can so many Chinese be openly critical of their actions? Why would so many come to the hospital to comfort the mother? As angry as everyone wants to be about it, maybe it was a simple mistake. Out of the corner of someone's eye she could have looked like just a pile of clothing. They simply might not have known or noticed.

  • go to hell to those people who did this 2 her, as a mother its so hurt

  • @jebby16 In the USA there are many stories of girls getting raped, and while screaming no one helped even though she was heard. this kind of situation could last more than 10 minutes. near death or not, anything cud happen to such victims too. in the philippines its even more dangerous. students attack females too even in college. i wudn't be surprised if this happened in the US. Ever read The Glass Castle? Happens in south and north states.

  • @coolgalaxy I agree, I'm chinese (american born) and im rly starting to hate the people in china. SO many freaking people are dishonest and cheat on each other even in business. (did we mention that chinese pple are crazy drivers?) morality in china has hit the bottom. its ghastly and ugly. well, there's more dishonesty in the richer areas to be more accurate. however one chinese person came to save the girl, a poor street woman.

  • China walang kwenta pina-execute yun 4 na pinoy

ayoko na sayo yun mura bilihin mo sa divisoria nakaka-lead

    argh justice for yue yue

  • just pray it will not happen to you..(.to those who ignore the child.)..there is called karma...one angel had passed away because of being a monster of those people who didn't help.....go to hell...Satan is waiting for you there................................. racial discrimination......
