"In other words, the planters recognised that far from white
and black automatically hating each other, there was a likelihood of some whites establishing close relations with the slaves—and the colonial authorities sought to stamp this out by giving slave owners the power of life and death. It was now that racism began to develop as an ideology.

The prevalence of racism today leads people to think it has always existed, arising from an innate aversion of people from one ethnic background for those from another.

Slavery is then seen as a byproduct of racism, rather than the other way round.

Yet in the ancient and medieval worlds, people did not regard skin colour as any more significant than, say, height, hair colour or eye colour. Tomb paintings from ancient Egypt show fairly random mixtures of light, brown and black figures. Many important figures in Roman history came from north Africa, including at least one emperor;
no text bothers to mention whether they were light
or dark skinned. In Dutch paintings of the early 16th century, black and white people are shown as mixing freely—as, for instance, in Jordaens painting Moses and Zipporah, which shows Moses wife as black.

There was often deep hostility to Jews in medieval Europe. But this was hostility on the basis of religion, as Jews were the only non-Catholic group in a totally Christian society, not on the basis of allegedly inherent physical or mental characteristics. Their persecutors would leave them alone if they sacrificed their religious beliefs. What
was involved was irrational religious hatred, not irrational biological racism. This only arose with the slave trade."

  • The possibly bizzar theories of Maxwell Jordan in this talk I think are very entertaining (notice sexy pop singer and model i've included to sort of augment some points the scholar is making), yet contain many thought-provoking ideas, of a general merit universal and enjoyable, as in the lines of people following the dictum, "The unexamined life is not worth living."

  • @pvelectric Yeah, the sexy model sure makes it more interesting..! Ha ha! This vid should go viral! (Not that I'm gay) but a pretty face is sure more of an attention getter than Maxwell's slobbish look)... Hey, I can't help it.. sex sells ya know!.. BTW.. I have to tell you that I really like your comments. It's obvious how schooled you are.. Very good. Maxwell doesn't impress me.. He's definitely on a MUCH lower level. I hope you weren't referring to him as a scholar?. Definitely not.. Lol!

  • @Queenyinthehouse i really should gather in parts and post the rest of this talk, given about 15 years ago in an hour long radio interview. It’s instructive about his early motives and studious work. The man is just trying to figure out why the world seems so messed up, it seems to me. So illogically cruel, nasty, brutish and short, as Hobbes described "the state of nature." Civilization was supposed to "cure" this irrational chaos and violence, so was capitalism, communism, and ideologies.

  • Boy, I cannot understand for the life of me WHY people are STILL listening to Maxwell after the lunacies he spreads. The problem is that he mixes truth with lies because he's part of the realm of losers who make money off of people who pay for stupidity. These people ALL plagairize each other & others follow right along believing everything he is saying. Poor con man Jordanus Maximus, Russel Pine, Jordie, whatever other aliases he uses. Makes it harder for the law to make contact I guess.

  • @Queenyinthehouse The talk, just a small portion of a much longer and interesting radio show circa 1989, I know has some outrageous generalizations, and peculiar ideas, certainly over-simplification. I wonder how popular Henry David Thoreau's lectures were, he use to give to a few Concord citizens at the lyceum. Very un, and his self-published Walden was distributed to a few of his friends, and totally bashed by the publishing elites.

  • @Queenyinthehouse This "law" you talk about is very important to you. That tells me all I need to know about you. I want it on record that I find the law even more disgusting than government and religion. Jesus was a convict and you seem to like him. I do not respect UN or US law any more than I do the laws that were used to kill Jesus.

  • @NewWorldSlaughter048 All obeying a law does is simulate honesty. The US Government, the "Free Market" "Capitalists," under Allen Greenspan's spell, and other mouthpiece intellectual economist-hacks, the Corporate Medias, and billionaires dictators, made sure all the laws preventing dishonesty were eliminated. Profit snatching was the only law, and we the people got our pockets picked. Trickle (sucking) up Reaganomics, making all their frauds "honest" in the law's eyes.
