Joseph Szigeti
(József Szigeti) (*5 September, 1892, Budapest; †20 February, 1973, Luzern)
The student of Jenő Hubay at the Budapest Academy of Music performed as a soloist from 1905. Amongst his merits is that he was prominent in familiarizing the world with the works of Hungarian composer Béla Bartók who dedicated his 1st Rhapsody to Szigeti. In 1939 together with Bartók, they performed the initial two-movement version of "Contrast", and in 1940 with Benny Goodman, Szigeti recorded the final three-movement version. Also, with Goodman's big band, he contributed to a 1939 jazz recording.
Szigeti's memoires, "With strings attached. Reminiscences and reflections." Have first been published at New York in 1947, a Hungarian edition (Beszélő húrok) has been released in 1965. Joseph Szigeti (József Szigeti) (*5 September, 1892, Budapest; †20 February, 1973, Luzern)
