Rex's Revenge: HOOD LOVE 2...coming soon from Alm Hlgh
* * * *

I can't believe that it has already been ten years since she has been gone. I've waited impatiently for my 22nd birthday to get here.
I was twelve when I lost my big sister Angela and my life has never been the same. When I was 19; the exact age that my sister's husband Miles was when he first met her, I decided then that I had to do something. I couldn't allow my sister's death to fade as if she had never been here. I couldn't allow for the perpetrators to get away with her murder. Today is the memorial of her death it's my third least favorite day of the year. There are three days in the year that I absolutely refuse to leave my room; remove my corpse like body from my bed.
The first day is March 21st; Angela's birthday. Traditionally in American culture it marks the day of a new season; spring. Spring is the sign of new growth and new beginnings. Angela was born March 21st and her birth marked a new beginning for mom and dad as first time parents starting a new family in a new home in a new city in the spring time. With each passing spring I am constantly reminded of a time that is supposed to mark a new beginning only being marred by a tragic time when I lost someone very special born on this day in the spring time; a day of new beginnings coming to a tragic end.
My second least favorite day is; well it's a tie and when I think about it, maybe I have four days a year that are my least favorite times of the year. I will list these two days in chronological order. My second and third days are: Thanksgiving and Christmas day. These days are like a death sentence for me. Both days are days to be shared and enjoyed with your family, yet when we sit down for dinner during those special times or decorate our house to give it a festive atmosphere; they are always overshadowed by the absence of her presence. It's almost as if the silence is screaming at us reminding us that there is an empty void in our lives that just can't be filled no matter how much we try to push forward. No matter how much we forge ahead; the past haunts us and little pieces of us are stuck in it always trying to hold onto little shadows and traces of Angela.
Of course my fourth least favorite day of the year would be today; Angela's memorial day. This is the single worse day of my life. I still remember when mom and dad arrived back from Florida. It's a never-ending nightmare that is forever replayed in my memories and burned into my sensory preceptors.
"We brought Angie home," I remembered hearing mom's voice on the other end of the phone after having landed at O'Hare Airport. It sounded hollow and unfamiliar to me; like a stranger.
I remembered when I went to the funeral home and mom and dad had prepared a casket for him; the two of them laid side-by-side as if they were lying on a bed of matrimony bliss. I wanted to run up to his casket and punch his lights out. I wanted to hit him and kick him for getting my sister killed. I swore to him & on my sister's grave that I would make them pay for their crime. I am Rex Mayfield younger brother to Angela Mayfield-Grant. You read her story in: The Princess & The Thug- Hood Love; but this is my story, Rex's Revenge: Hood Love 2
