This aerial view shows ALE's new ultra-heavy lifting machine the AL.SK90 during its erection and testing in Breda, Netherlands in September 2008.
The crane is shown with 130m of main mast attached to the back mast by a novel topping system, which raises the main mast and connects both structures during lifting.
Unlike conventional cranes the ballast does not slew with the load. The crane slews around a fixed ballast tray. This makes the AL.SK90 an extremely compact machine for its lifting capacity.
A first for a crane of this type is that it can be relocated on site fully rigged saving considerable time during the construction schedule of major projects. The ability to lift heavy loads at large distances allows customers to complete foundations and piperacks in advance of major equipment installation.
FPSO construction benefits from the ability to build much larger process packages and install them from the land side without relying on floating cranes or relocating the hull within the limited radius of conventional cranes.
