The Brooklyn Center Police Department was recently awarded a $154,538 grant by the Office of Justice Programs to prevent auto theft in the city. The grant will fund one full time officer for two years to investigate and prevent automobile thefts.
The Brooklyn Center City Council recognized six winners of the annual Landscape and Garden Contest at its meeting Monday. Receiving awards were Darryl and Diane Sannes for the Judges Best Overall Front Yard Gardens and Landscaping, Yvonne and Fred Bebensee for Great Street Presentation and Allan and Darnell Hancock received the Great Presence in the Community award. St. Alphonsus, Women's Auxiliary of the Brooklyn Center American Legion and Community Gardeners at Brooklyn Center School District also received awards for their group's gardening contribution.
Four of seven middle schools and two of five high schools made Adequate Yearly Progress in the Anoka Hennepin School District this year. This is an improvement for the district's secondary schools in the last year. The AYP status reports are part of the federal No Child Left Behind Act. Only 10 elementary schools in the district made AYP, but the district's reading and math scores for all grades except grade 11 math are above the state average this year.
