People sometimes ask why doesn't Tuli write more songs like "Morning, Morning," and the answer comes back, he can't. One of the songwriting miracles from the Fugs Second Album on ESP-disk, 1966, it was just inspired, he doesn't know how he did it and can't do it again. The muse for "Morning, Morning" pictured in this video was Sally Eaton, actress, Wiccan priestess, the hippie witch in Jim Rado/ Gerry Ragni's 1968 musical "Hair." Tuli was in love with her when it wrote it. Richie Havens did the most famous cover of it but never got the lyrics right. They are presented here as Tuli typed them for inclusion in his yet to be published novel about the Fugs. In 1971 Tuli was in Montreal with his theatre company, The Revolting Theatre. That same year Québecois chanteur Richard Huet released his first album on Polydor. On it was "Tout Seul" a French adaptation of the Fugs' masterpiece "Morning, Morning." Tuli did not know of the existence of "Tout Seul" until he saw it mentioned on the internet in the 1990's. After quite a search, we finally found the old vinyl on Ebay and digitized the song. The pictures are of Richard Huet's first two albums. Thanks to philipchek of YouTube and Paris for assisting with the translation. Thanks also to Sylvain La frenière, Canadian rare vinyl dealer through Music Stack for quickly shipping me the record and for correcting my spelling of "fois."

  • Hi, my name is Richard Huet. First of all, I wish to thank you for posting my version of "Morning, Morning". It was the very first song I recorded in Paris way back in 1970. I was very inexperienced and scared as hell... It was quite a surprise for me to find it here. I didn't even imagine anyone knew of its existence outside of Montréal. May I send you a better recording of it and some pictures to accompany it? If you wish, you may write me at richardverdun@videotron.ca Merci beaucoup.

  • @HuetRichard Bonjour Richard! Good to hear from you. One would never know you weren't a seasoned professional when you recorded "Tout Seul," it is so very beautiful. Tuli would have been very pleased that you chose his song as your first recording. I will write to you e-mail address for your other recording and pictures.

  • I agree with mikeblitzmag. One of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Fugs Second Album is an absolute masterpiece. A masterwork. I always thought the lyrics, strangely enough, could apply to a vampire. I was in a Folk/Bluegrass duo many years ago and we performed this. People loved it.

    RIP Tuli.

  • One of most beautiful songs in the English language.

  • @tulifuli Merci beaucoup!

  • Thanks for this beautiful song. Seems like yesterday my friend..

  • It's a sad morning... Tuli's gone... RIP

  • Thank you for the important notes. This is such a beautiful song. Unforgettable.
