This is a table top review in which I discuss some issues which I have encountered with my Smith and Wesson model 617. I purchased this .22 lr revolver to compliment a Smith and Wesson 686P.

After one trip back to the Smith and Wesson factory this revolver still has a number of persistent issues which have caused me to regret purchasing this firearm. Originally I was rather impressed with Smith and Wesson's customer service. Recently I have become rather aggravated by my inability to get speak to a customer representative and explain my problems.

  • Hi im here in florida i know how to fix your problem , im originally from cebu city the gun capital of philippines, if you are near i can fix that...building a gun is different from trouble shooting a gun...we are far from U.S. thats why we fix our smith in our own . i can help you with that for free... If your far from south florida just try to fix the cylinder lock ang firing pen timing ..

  • Hi @45camcor

Thanks for your interest and your willingness to help, however the issue has been taken care of. Smith and Wesson has replaced this particular firearm.

    Thanks

  • Hello,

Any update on repairs from Smith?

  • Hi @dgallag339

Rather than continue to deal with this particular pistol and the problems which it had, I chose to have Smith and Wesson send me a knew firearm chambered in a different caliber. I have a very reliable .22 LR semiautomatic handgun with I have decided will fill my .22 pistol needs. Ill be doing a short review on it in the near future. As well as a table top review on my knew firearm from smith and Wesson.

Thanks for your views and interest

  • Bought a 617 in Jan 2011. You can shoot this gun all day cheaply. Have shot thousands of rounds of various brands of 22LR with no problems until last month. Ejector rod sticking, cylinder jams and problems similar to the video above. I am confident S&W can fix this since I have fired thousands of rounds with this gun with no problems. I will keep you all posted.

  • @rickdiehl

Sorry to hear that you are dealing with some of the same issues I had.

Post a video once you get your gun back.

  • Anyone ever told you that you are not supposed to dry fire a rimfire gun? Doing so can damage either the firing pin or the rim of the chambers (plural).

  • i know what your going thru i just bought the new governor took it out of the box fired 4 rds of 45acp it also locked up had to keep calling cust ser it has taken me a month to get it sent back and still waiting for it to come back when it does its gone i will take my 700.00 and buy 2 cheap guns smith is making guns that are just as bad as anybodys and charging for the name

  • i had the same probloms with mine,i finally just sold the som a bitch

  • Mine locked up loaded watching this video ...Unreal

  • @popcorncrow ...slap it hard....lol

  • I got one of those too... mine... I fire 10 rounds...then the cyl. comes out ok but the emptys don't wanna extract.... have to slap it hard...to make the spent casings come out. I'm gonna buy a taurus 941 in 22mag 8 rounder. Oh...btw....Good Video

  • I've fired a few thousand round through my 617 (the 6" barrel) absolutely perfectly.

you can see a video of me shooting it on my channel.

  • Hi, just wanted to say that I enjoyed the review. I've always been a fan of revolvers, however at 18 they're out of my price range. So I'd like to look into taking the same route I took with my 1911 and buy one chambered in .22 or .22 magnum. Do you know of a reliable 357 style revolver that won't break the bank? Thanks.

  • quit fixing the gun and the give the man a new gun to start with

  • Excellent well documented and detailed video. Im going to wait about a year now so perhaps S&W can get their QC in order with the 617. I want one so bad but im reading lots of forums of other 617 owners having the same problems as described in this video. TO S&W: GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER!!!!
