This is a gentle introduction to curves and more specifically algebraic curves. We look at historical aspects of curves, going back to the ancient Greeks, then on the 17th century work of Descartes.
We point out some of the difficulties with Jordan's notion of curve, and move to the polynumber approach to algebraic curves.

The aim is to set the stage to generalize the algebraic calculus of the previous few lectures to algebraic curves.

  • I dont understand what is meant by "European Work". Weren't Archimedes, Nicomedes, Ptolemy Europeans as well? Or is that some special term?

  • @makedonas86 By European I refer to the modern era, starting around the 1500's in Europe. As for the ancients you mention, while no doubt they spoke Greek, their background would have been varied, and some of them lived in Alexandria, in Africa.

  • @DanPartelly

I will check it out. Thank you.

  • @belaghoulashi. Watch "Human behavioral biology serie by Robert Sapolsky. Its available here on the tube.

"The end of free will" ... and ... "we are very likely all automatons" are two true and simple statements but they also managed to throw countless humans in depression, denial and fear. Ironically, it seems that the truth does not set one(too many) free.

  • Not apropos of this particularly video, really, but I just read through your essay on ID and Evolution earlier this evening.

Very, very illuminating and thought-provoking. It might be worthwhile to make a video or two on that topic as well, if you haven't already done so.

  • Hello! I love your lessons, but i would like to suggest improving the quality of sound in your videos.

  • thank you for the video!

  • The Peano curve reminds me of a question every time it appears:

    What is a dimension?
