The Soviets were always at the top, but sadly they got forced into gymnastics and were pushed really hard. They're all so small because of the work load and how little they were allowed to eat. They were amazing, though.

gymnasts used to be beautiful, now they look like pumped up cheerleaders- what happened to the discipline?

4:23 to 4:27 - look at that; she stumbles a little but turns it into a dramatic "falling onto my knees" and it still looks beautiful.

Nowadays, it's all about luck: is this non-beautiful routine going to be the one I don't lose any balance on or...?

The Soviet gymnasts were definitely amazing and did beautiful gymnastics, but  that was weird at 1:23.

@BritneysOnlyLover I think also the end of the massive subsidies and pressure apparatus during the Soviet era have something to do with the decline. But still, compare gymnastics even now to gymnastics in the pre-Soviet era and clearly it is still better than before, even if it is not as good as it was during the peak. I suspect the Soviet era was a showcase of gymnastics at its absolute best within the realm of possibility.

Soviet people was the most gorgeous and friendly people of the world..... now this is only the past. the collapse of the USSR was a real tragedy for us.

The gymnast at 4:50 with the short red hair is Elena Shevchenko. She was a member of the 1988 Olympic team. I think her floor routine in this montage is from the 1986 Goodwill Games judging from the yellow carpeting.
