My final project for Media Production I

The assignment was to portray an emotion using only diegetic sound and no dialogue.

I edited the project with Final Cut Pro. The sound is a bit goofy. I had issues relating the waveforms FCP presents and how they relate to the actual output. Also, I learned the value of having a lot of volume through the headphones as as many speaker sets and headphones will not show you all the the little glitches in audio.

  • I hate the stigma that the media is mainly responsible for eating disorders. So I didn't like the magazine being used as a prop.

  • @shannonxcannon I agree, but I think you rushed to judge here. If the media isn't to blame for her issues, what is? Consider the subtext in this video: she's young and home alone. No one is around in her life to build her up. Media images reinforce exisiting insecurities-- they don't cause them.

  • @fleischr2689 I have an eating disorder, I moderate an online eating disorder community, and the media isn't to blame. While society plays a part in the way a woman "should" look, eating disorders have little to do with appearance. They are coping mechanisms for fucked up shit that has happened in life. I just think that the magazine posed a message of "cause" rather than positive reinforcement. Bulimia is definitely more of a compulsion than presented in this clip as well.

  • @shannonxcannon Ahhh... I see, so you say that I portrayed too much as an impulse reaction. I actually originally wanted to add to this story that this girl was a child of divorced parents both of whom were too busy to be with her. But because of constraints due to the assigned project parameters and getting another actor that couldn't happen. Thanks for your feedback!

  • The only thing what is realistic is the purging part but any way it's a great project =)

  • I'm glad you enjoyed it.

This is a topic matter I believe is under-represented in the media at large.

  • Liked the video. I've been there, it sucks. But I agree, we shouldn't shelter people from such serious issues. The key to helping people recover and to help prevent it, is to put it out there and discuss eating disorders openly.
