It is pretty much for the fact Lucas is overly timid, rather then Ness, who is much braver, Lucas becomes more brave over time thought.

And unless you have played the game, you won't really understand the concept, that statue have like, 100,000,000 hp, and the only way to defeat it is to use PK Flash which can kill it in one shot with a bit of luck, or use an item that reduces it's HP to 1.
