The biggest single problem in the US is the size of the schools - huge schools with thousands of students. What are you trying to produce - sausages? Less is more. Another problem is the emphasis on sports - strange considering the US is the most obese country in the world. It's good to have some sport, and to enjoy it but an obsession with sport can also be connected with a rejection of intellectual values, and that's not good.
@yakyakyak69 Yak. Your Government forces you to pay taxes, they force you to have no health cover as you don't pay for it and they force you to pay taxes so the fire brigade puts out the fire on your home, and forces you to pay taxes so the police can arrest you when you do something wrong. Education costs the state, you have the rights as a citizen to live off the state, this can only work if the or country is viable, hence, without education you won't compete in the world!!!
@ausmies I do appreciate teachers, but I HATE monopolies! Any kind of monopoly! Union monopoly & gov't monopoly are the WORST kinds because gov't can LEGALLY steal everything you have, put you in prison or even KILL YOU! Unions use fear, intimidation & violence to take all they can get.
When unions bargain with the same gov't, officials that THEY donated campaign money to, NOBODY represents the taxpayers or the children... nobody!
Gov't can FORCE you to send your child to THEIR schools!
@yakyakyak69 Sat, I bet nobody in Finland you be saying anything along those lines at Pasi Sahlberg, educated people are appreciated, they also don't have to pay for university as is their system, they also don't have to get medical insurance. To do teacher application exams in Finland you must graduate in the top 20% from hichschool, then of the 5000 applicants, get in the top 325 for the entrance exam and the last 325 are from a combination of exam/HS grad. grade. Appreciate your teachers!!!
Just wait until we catch up with Finland, on our defense spending as % of GDP. As soon as we get down to approx. 1.5%, then you can start trying to make fantasies about nationwide educational reform towards improvement a more-likely goal.
Americans often hate to talk about or acknowledge the issue of class. That's is a very powerful reason that the term 'middle-class' is used to then near exclusion to 'working class' or even 'under class'. Finland has much less disparity. That counts!!
Teachers are where the Education starts. In America, we let Politicians control the class by lowering teacher’s salaries along with standards thereof. 1 teacher per 30 students is uncontrollable and nonproductive. Until we put the best and brightest teachers inside the class to teach, Americans should expect mediocre results from the students and be happy with it, which is what we got, except for the happy part. Few are happy with our educational system.

"Your Government forces you to pay taxes." True, leagalized redistribution to buy votes with other people's money!
"...they force you to have no health cover...." LIE, healthcare is a service CHOICE like food or the type of home you have!
I've seen MANY homes burn down.
I've seen MANY people murdered BY the Police.
Education does NOT cost the "state" it costs the taxpayers!
A state bankrupted by politicians BUYING union "support" w/taxpayer money is NOT viable!
