Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or spastic colon is a functional bowel disorder characterized by abdominal pain and changes in bowel habits which are more... not associated with any abnormalities seen on routine clinical testing. It is fairly common and makes up 20--50% of visits to gastroenterologists. Lower abdominal pain, and bloating associated with alteration of bowel habits and abdominal discomfort relieved with defecation are the most frequent symptoms.

IBS is highly prevalent in the Western world, but despite the advancement of many theories, no clear cause has yet been established.

Stress—feeling mentally or emotionally tense, troubled, angry, or overwhelmed—may trigger symptoms in people with IBS. One study found that women with IBS are more likely to report prior physical or sexual abuse; almost half of the patients reported prior abuse.

IBS is not fatal nor is it linked to the development of other serious bowel diseases. However, due to the chronic pain, discomfort, and other symptoms, work absenteeism, social phobias, and other negative quality-of-life effects can be common in more serious cases. Individuals who find a caring primary caregiver and/or sufficient self-help options should be able to develop a successful treatment program for their symptoms and lead normal lives.

  • IBS is doctor speak for "i don't know what's wrong with you".

  • People have been saying "eat healthy" for years, well i eat healthy, and starving myself is the only way i avoid bloating, pains, spasms, and the rest. No diet helps. It causes eating disorders. We fear the physical pains.

  • If you combine fruit with ANYTHING you will be in much pain. Eat fruit by itself and wait a couple hours before eating other things. Also, things heavy in fiber will make you want to die.

  • For me, drinking or eating milk products aggravates my bowls a ton...

  • Ive had IBS for 10 years(since 16yo) its gotten alot worse now, when it comes to attack i must take days off work because its so bad :(, they only way i can get rid of it fast is by eating mabey 2 rivitas 1 apple and loads of water per day

  • @LamontCJ Stress can be a big factor with IBS (school) but you are doing the right thing staying hydrated (be sure it's filtered water) and eating right and avoiding junk food. I would say to take a look at high quality probiotics and a nutrient rich superfood supplement.

  • I'm 15 and I am a new IBS patient! WOOHOO! I've been eating healthy all my life, no white flour or sugar. I drink 3 cups tea a day with honey, i have beans, eggs, sourdough whole wheat bread, threeepieces of fruit daily, three vegentables with vinegar. I drink as much water as possible, And I run a mile a day, and ever since highschool started 4 weeks ago i am constantly constipated, and bloated, and hahah.. FUCK EVERYTHING!

    i am okay with fatty foods .

    i first got IBS aged 17 and my IBS is getting worse over the years .

  • Instead of saying "I eat healthy", say what you eat. Maybe something you think is good, is actually bad.
