Petra is situated in the Valley basin and at the heart of the Shara Mountains at around 1100m above sea level. Undiscovered by Westerners until 1812, its first significance was documented in the Old Testament, as the Israelites approached Edom after their forty years in the desert. The fascinating sandstone rocks, with their sumptuous colouring, hold interesting stories of the Nebateans, their "Gods" and their ancient beliefs; and much appreciated shade for those feeling the heat.
