'Ural Owl' by Tracy Hall.
Finely detailed watercolour painting showing the stages from the initial sketch to the completed piece. The painting measures 6.5" x 4.5" and is worked on Arches HP paper.

This is my first attempt at a video of me working; I hope its not too long and that you enjoy it:)

  • Tracy, what magnificent control in watercolor. What brush type and size are you using please?

  • Many thanks for all the comments.

@LoraleiSuzanne - the brushes I used here were kolinsky sables (series 33) by Rosemary and co and range in size from 3 to 10/0. Hope that helps.

"lapommepourrie - the music id symphony 40 by mozart, but sorry I don't know anymore about this version, it was available to add through youtube.

  • Thanks so much everyone for your comments. I'm really pleased you enjoyed the video so much. Hopefully I will be able to do another one soon...just a matter of finding the time as they seem to take me longer than the paintings!

  • Thanks so much everyone, I am really pleased you enjoyed it. It was a swine to make as I'm no video expert (or even novice), but seeing your comments makes it worthwhile and I hope it has been helpful.

Freeinjapan - watercolours are AMAZING. They can do anything you want :)

Thanks to all for looking and posting your comments!

  • Hi - its white watercolour (titanium). I add it to the mix to make it opaque for fine hairs (or feathers!). I expect gouache would work much the same though. Thanks again for your nice comments and I hope that helps.

  • I watched this video 6 times, I love it, Birds are my fav. Request more of your bird art. One ? Is this water color paper? what r u painting on? This is wonderful :) Aloha from Hawaii

  • Fabulous work! You are painting in the style that I aspire to. Thank you so much for the inspiration. Brava!

  • mind=blown

  • Beautiful work

  • how did you do the leaves?

Id like to try a picture like this but i cant do leaves, please help!

  • Veramente brava. Complimenti.

  • I would prefer that you speak about what you are doing and thinking rather than music. I can choose my own music. You are thinking constantly about your choices. Share this with us! I can't tell when the paper is wet or dry, for example. I can't see you mix colors or load the brush either. You could talk about all these choices and techniques.

  • Were you painting from a photo, because it seems like you understood the details of the owl so well?

  • What brand paper and paints are you using? May I ask the colors? Is that a vandyke brown or an umber and also is that a sap green or a mixed green you made yourself. I was playing a game while watching your video, trying to figure the colors out. Also is that a rose madder or alizaron crimson. Thank you so much, and I agree, what a painting and technique!

  • Your painting is incredible!

  • please use real time!!!! the video and your art is too good for time lapse and music over it!!!
