I took this picture in 2006 and have asked the question since that date, what in the world is this triangle. Is this a landing strip, is this a jogging track, I dont know? I have family in Wittman AZ and they dont know what it is....
You will find those old auxiliary airfields all over the southwest. Many became civil airfields after the war if they were close enough to population centers to be of practical use.
I live in Tempe, and I just zoomed in on it on google earth, and you can see a crashed plane in the desert at the lower left side of the triangle...check it out.
It's Luke AirField #1, a WW2 airfield part of the Luke Air Force Base. The race track people are referring to is the Volvo Arizona Proving Ground which is a test track that opened in 1985. Ford took over the test track in 2009 and now it's just called the Arizona Proving Ground.
Cool vid! Your pictures from the plane are excellent.

My mistake, it's actually Luke Auxiliary Airfield 4 ... not 1. Lots of triangle airfields in that area.
