صلب means crucify as a verb in Arabic. There is a chance that his surname comes from the period of crusades in around Malta with the connotation to be understood as "people of the cross".

Thank You so much for uploading this Dr. George Saliba lecture. I heard of him on a BBC video on the History of Maths.
I have not seen this video yet but am looking forward to it. I have known for years that the Islamic scholars of the past were the keeps of the great Greek tradition that all of us know to day. I was unaware of the amplification of mathematics that Arab scholars made to geometry. Wonderful to know. I wish that western man on the street was aware of this. Thanks Again
