He went on the edge because he saw the shiny patch. Going on the edge won't always break your chain but you should only go on the egge if you see the shiny patch.

just a word of advice...if u faint ur abra and put it as first in ur party....it still passes the nature, but the repel effect goes for the next pokemon in ur party, i do it all the time to get shinies with good natures

Yeah, I know, I do that with Elekid and Magnemite when I try to chain Electic and Steel types. I can't be bothered to do it every time with Abra though. =/
