The Magic Maths shows with Mathemagician Andrew Jeffrey at the Helix Theatre on Monday 17th October attracted over 1,500 primary school pupils who learned that maths and numbers can be great fun. Maths Week Ireland promotes awareness, appreciation and understanding of maths through a huge variety of events and activities. It's an all-Ireland celebration of Maths and a partnership of almost 50 universities, institutes of technology, colleges, museums, libraries, visitors centres and professional bodies. See mathsweek.ie for more details.
Amazing, fun, interesting - and that learning must be fun. It certainly can be fun, but we are misleading children that learning is not worthwhile unless it is accompanied by giraffes jumping through flaming hoops. Or magic tricks.
I think, sometimes, that we should respect the children we teach by letting them know that learning can occasionally be very boring - percentages, fractions or ... learning to drive a car - but it just has to be done.
Let's not mislead them too much, Andrew.
