The Venetian Fete originated in 1888 at the opening of the Great Bridge and continued every year right through to the 1950s, though the war did disrupt it. The best ones were around 1921 with the opening of River Walk, built by the unemployed. Not everyone knows Tonbridge had such a fete, particularly newcomers and young people but some locals can still remember it and how good it was... The Riverside became a huge grandstand, and the local community came out in droves..
