Since the newly refurbished Bexhill Library opened its doors in May 2008, it has seen a big increase in library members and the number of books borrowed.
East Sussex County Council spent £436,000 on the Bexhill Library refurbishment and improvement works. Access was improved with a new entrance with automatic doors, the ground floor was completely refurbished, and a toilet, baby changing facilities and a new lift were installed. The layout has also been greatly improved to give a welcoming, flexible and modern space. The new self-service facilities are also proving popular with customers and around half the items currently being borrowed, renewed and returned from the library are being issued by customers themselves.
The Library refurbishment is entered for the 2009 Public Library Buildings Awards. Shortlisting for the award is due to take place in May/June.
