With the Cold War and the threat of impending nuclear destruction, over 1500 ROC monitoring posts were built spanning the whole of the UK in the late 50s. These small underground bunkers were manned by the volunteer members of the ROC, and equipped to measure radiation levels, as well as blast location and size. The ROC was disbanded in the early 90s.

These two ROC posts were both rather bare, and had suffered at the hands of local kids.

  • Yep ... you do get the occasional reversed post. I've visited a couple. I've never worked out why tho' ... perhaps the builders had bad day ;-).

  • My dad was a volunteer in one of these posts - Sawtry Post it was, part of the Bedford Group I think. See there was one of these up for auction on ebay recently... anyone know how much it went for?

  • We have those in Shenington, although they are covered in overgrown grass now. The old bomb shelters are more accessible though.

  • It's a shame that they have been vandalised, but I guess it is inevitable if they're sitting unlocked.

The second bunker is interesting, the layout of the entrance shaft and toilet recess are the reverse from normal.

  • cant understand why these places dont have a gas tight or steel door to keep out radiation
