This video shows how while riding at the walk, you can feel when your horse is about to pick up his hind leg and use your leg aids in time with his hoof being in the air. Since we want to move the hind leg over to step under the horse, it makes sense to apply pressure just as the horse is about to pick up that particular leg. It's hard to move a leg that has weight planted on it.
This is a good exercise for beginning to feel what your horse is doing under you, instead of having to look or have someone tell you.
You can also practice looking up (and sitting up or back) while you go into the canter, then test if you can feel what lead he took before you look down to check. After awhile, you'll be able to recognize it by feel and you'll be riding better because you won't be leaning forward on your horse's front end as he works to pick it up at the canter.
Hi Horsesrule 53. I used to use the"cones drill" (see my videos) but now I do this: Under saddle at the walk go in straight line. Then look Left, put on your(outside) right calf (not hard) and then turn him left . Ride in that direction looking straight and going straight. Then look left, put your leg on, then turn him. Repeat, all L turns. He will anticipate that outside leg means move away from it. Later this leg can be used on inside so you can move body out and make balanced turns.
