Cool handheld and games. The Atari Lynx and the Sega Game Gear clearly demonstrate how better tech specs doesn't necessarily translate into market share against first to market (effectively) products like Nintendo's B&W Gameboy.

The emulator runs perfectly on the gp2x's lcd although tv-out will squeeze half of he screen to the left.

  • This thing was so advanced in time

  • This and the Sega Game Gear that came later. Neither could unseat the gameboy's crap-tastic graphics.

  • enjoyed the vid man, brought back memories. hey where do u get the handheld u were playing the roms on. i want 1. cheers

  • it's called a gp2x. googling for it should return several hits ( I don't want to advertise one vs. another). But watch out for the Pandora. a successor coming out this summer!

  • Great video. I have an Atari Lynx and about a dozen games. I was really surprised at how good the games look when I first played it. I might have to pick up that Raiden game. I wouldn't mind having a handheld version of it.

  • Yeah, it still amazes me to this day how the B&W gameboy beat out the Lynx and Sega Game Gear all of those years.

  • I love Sensible Soccer, Power Drive, Attack of the mutant penguins, Super Burn Out!!!

  • you forgot the best one .... WOLFENSTEIN

  • I know all about the Jaguar, I bought one when it first came out. There are only a few good games for it, and you already named them. It had no support. To be honest, the best thing about the Jaguar was the growl sound when you turned it on, and it was a cool, slick looking system. A good collectors item. Now the Saturn, that was a bad ass system with killer software.

  • Jaguar wasnt whack have you seen SkyHammer those graphics alone make you question whether Saturn was better at 3D graphics than Jaguar or not,not to mention Jaguar had better games oh sure only 60 but out those you got Rayman,Worms,Alien vs Predator,Missile Command 3D,Raiden, and Iron Soldiers 1 and 2

  • Yes but Game Gear didn't have SEGA goodies or even good 3rd party, and Game Boy is like the Ps2 of all handhelds in terms of success

  • Lynx's problems

    1.Too big

    2.Crappy 1st party

3.Holy Crap Batman size[see Tolstoy Kafka Evsky's review]

    5.Eat batteries for breakfast

    Game Gear's Problems

1.Game Boy already had the market

    2.Ate batteries for breakfast

    3.Expensive

Game Boy merely looked ugly graphically and by design

  • Actually if you put both competitors in black and white, only Lynx actually looked better

  • The lynx failed for 3 reasons

    1. There weren't enough companies that supported it, resulting in a lesser game library than the gameboy

    2. It was too expensive

    3. The batteries didn't last very long

    4. It was HUGE! Not very portable, is it ;)

Now with the nintendo DS vs the PSP, the PSP has similar problems

    1. the games are almost all ported from ps2, but alot of them are badly ported.

    2. the batteries don't last very long

    3. it's more expensive than the nintendo DS.

    4. it's not as durable

  • By saying this handheld was so advance in it's time does not mean it was great. For all I know from the looks of it, this thing looks like a shittier, even bulkier, version of the Game Gear. Gameboy ruled all kinds of dominance, and it always will even though after 15 years later they finally stopped making Gameboy. GBA Micro I believe was the last GB.
