I'm 52 and have watched 1000's of movies. I'm inclined to agree with you. The dialogue of Goodfellas pops and sizzles, the movie is stylish without being cloying, the soundtrack is artful and timeless and accurately captures the zeitgeist of the life and times of Henry Hill.The most superb casting outside of The Godfather, the character arcs take you on a rollercoaster of emotions.

Martin Scorcese missed a wonderful marketing opportunity. Imagine a book entitled "How to Cook Like a Goodfella."

This portrays state prison in the old days. Five years in a state pen was a way for a wiseguy to show loyalty. Under RICO the bosses were shipped to gulag-style Federal pens and locked under 23 hours a day. Ask Anthony "Gaspipe" Casso how life is in the max prison in Florence, Co. Your only human contact is the guard who slips in your lunch tray through a slot.

There's a wonderful scene in the book Pope of Greenwich Village. The half-Italian protagonist Charlie says that "You want to eat good, go with Italians. You have a heart attack then get a Jew doctor. An Italian doctor may just say a rosary over you and be done with it. The Jews keep working." Just humor, no knock on all the fine Italian surgeons round the world.

in that prison i believe he was allowed to go shopping, that prison was like a house but you couldnt get out, only to meet the visits and shopping escoted by a guard
