John Frusciante - Time Runs Out
Album: The Will To Death (2004)

The Will to Death is the fifth studio album by John Frusciante, released on June 22, 2004 on Record Collection. The album reached #36 on the Top Independent Albums chart.

Frequent collaborator Josh Klinghoffer appears, performing drums, bass, and keyboard.

In 2004 Frusciante announced that he would produce six albums during a six month break from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, with The Will to Death being the first of these. Following the long and costly recording of his previous album, Shadows Collide With People, Frusciante decided to experiment with recording music quickly and in a minimalist fashion, performing a maximum of two takes per track.

Frusciante has stated that the album is intended to be "the opposite of Shadows Collide With People": "On The Will to Death, I thought it would be a good idea to make a record with very little backing vocals, because we'd done it so much on Shadows. I always have to have a new idea for each album. For The Will to Death, the idea was to have very little backing vocals. There's a lot of other huge differences. In every way, I wanted the opposite of Shadows. "

Lyrics:

I didn't lose you
In those fights I fought
I don't owe anyone
I've been sleeping all night
These times I recall
They came out
They came clean
I've been asleep
On top of myself

I was born in the morning
I died at night
I was found in a mirror, baby
They couldn't get me out
In these times, time runs out
It runs out...

Daydreams run along her
Feelings are goners
I've been sleeping
Once for a-a-all a-a-all
Mirrors are water, hey
A symbol of what death is not (aah aah)
Catch my meaning
Once for a-a-all a-a-all
I'm the ceiling
I'm the w-a-a-a-ll
You can't stand inside with me
The reverse of me is where you must be
In truth's place it li-i-i-ies
The mistakes you try-y-y-y-
Someone must be sleeping because all is quiet
Is there nothing in the mirror when you shut the light
The dark
The light
The dark
The light

  • This is one of my favorite John songs, although I haven't listened to all of his music yet. But I wonder why it's not more popular? It's so catchy, and the lyrics are so easy to relate to!

  • He wanted his music to be for the really and few outcast like him, not to be popular and generic with people spammin' his music everywhere with lots of wannabe punk or outcasts. He never wanted to be famous, he did say it u know?

Sor of his wish did come true

  • This whole album is one of my favourites by John. I can never get over the drums on this song, they're just so powerful. Josh is such a good drummer

  • @JFruscianteLove

Intelligence as far as music, yes.

Go ahead and listen to Pop music if you actually enjoy it. Just don't be like the millions who judge music based on how popular it is. What I meant by intelligence was knowledge of music. So, intelligence was the wrong word to use, and I apologize for that.

  • @786Vahi I don't think you can determine a person's intelligence level based on them listening to pop music. A lot of people like all kinds of music. I listen to what makes me feel good and happy, I listen to what makes me melancholy or introspective, and I'm not ashamed to say I listen to pop music at times as well - it's usually great to dance to. Seriously, what difference would it make to you if more people listened to John's music? Why should these "idiots" be deprived of his brilliance?

  • I guess some people interpreted my comment to mean, I wish his songs were played on the radio non-stop, along with JB and the rest of the pop stars. What I meant to say is, I'm surprised that this video does not have more views, as much as some of his other songs. Yet basically, all of his music is beyond amazing, so I guess it depends on which ones we are lucky enough to discover.

  • i love the drums in this song .josh is a great drummer.

  • @JFruscianteLove maybe coz it's catchy and easy to relate to.

  • I love the Dracula effects at 2:12 and 2:52 :)

  • @mizzuks dang..that's awesome to have had a parent that appreciated frusciante.

  • This was the first Frusciante song I ever liked. I recieved the album when I was incredibly young about a month after it's release from my mother, who died about a week later. She was a huge fan of John's work and was trying to get me into it. It's been eight/nine years and there hasn't been a single day in the last five where I haven't listened to one of John's songs. I'm running out of characters here, but it saddens me, that none of my friends care for his work. I really want to share it.

  • SHIT!!! only one of my speakers work and i can't hear john singing!!!
