06/07/2010 - Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) unveiled its latest smart phone, the much-anticipated iPhone 4, Monday afternoon at the Worldwide Developers Conference with some notable updates to the device, as well as to Apple's iPhone operating system.
CEO Steve Jobs led the keynote speech and grand unveiling, with new features including: a back and front facing camera with LED flash, a stainless steel frame on the sides of the device with scratch resistant glass on the front and back (for better optical quality), integrated antennas, an increased pixel density for sharper text, 3.5 inch display, 960 by 640 pixels (four times more than the 3GS model), a four times better contrast ratio of 800:1, and the new model also has 78% of the pixels on iPad.
The iPhone 4 is the thinnest smart phone ever made at just 9.3mm, which is 24% thinner than the iPhone 3GS.
"Face Time" video conferencing is available between iPhone 4 users, and the device's video camera includes HD recording , iMovie for iPhone, 720p at 30 fps, built-in video editing, one click sharing, and users can also tap to focus in on what is being recorded.
An iMovie app for iPhone may also be available for only $4.99 on Apples App Store, and Engadget.com's live blog wrote, "Video recording looks amazing. The quality is extremely impressive."
The photo camera is 5mp with an LED flash, 5x digital zoom, is equipped with a backside illuminated sensor, tap-to-focus capability, automatic geolocation, 5 different themes, and the ability to include photo transitions and titles.
Apple also revealed new updates to its mobile OS 4 platform, which has now been renamed i OS 4.
The i OS 4 is aimed to better business management, with added email security features, wireless app distribution, and an upgraded mail system.
iPhone carrier AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) will allow users to upgrade their devices before their contract expires.
Apple CEO Steve Jobs said, "If your contract expires at any time in 2010, you can upgrade to the iPhone 4. You can get it up to six months early."
The iPhone 4 will be available in black and white and the 16GB model will be available for $199, and 32GB model will go for $299.
iPhone 4 will be available beginning June 24th, but customers can pre-order starting June 15th.
The device will be shipped in the US, France, Germany, the UK and Japan, and beginning in July, Apple will begin shipping to 18 additional countries.
Shares of Apple are trading down 1.80% Monday afternoon at $251.37.
