On October 31, 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave a campaign speech before a crowd at Madison Square Garden. The words he spoke could be uttered in our present time. I have edited this just over 30-minute speech down to less than 10 minutes to provide highlights. We need this kind of leadership today.

I hate to piss you libtards off....but if it wasn't for Hitler starting WW2 and Japan bombing Pearl Harbor, we probably would never gotten out of the depression. Roosevelt was basically slowing down the recovery passing useless social reforms, increasing the size of government and making the people more dependent on the government. In fact, the only GOOD thing he did was giving us Social Security. If Roosevelt took the same path Harding did, he probably would've shorten the depression.

How about some civility, Tobey? Surely you can make your point without the invective, right?

FDR made good speeches but why did he not prosecute anyone behind the Fascist coup in the mid 30s? This has always troubled me, he had a meeting with them then everything just hushed right up. Those same names today are among the largest campaign contributors of both parties proving they were successful. There is not democracy in the US anymore nor in many of the so called democratic countries.

There has been some speculation that FDR did not have these people prosecuted in return for them backing off and letting him pursue his agenda. That may or may not be so, and if he did, I suppose it's a matter of opinion whether he did the right thing or not. I'm not sure about that myself. Certainly as you say, they still exercise their power.

New Deal policies started in 1933 by FDR who became the president on March 4, 1933. WWII started in 1939 the depression started in 1930. The New Deal policies created new jobs through the PWA which made the federal government by far the largest single employer in the nation. Without all of these 'useless social reforms' we might not have gotten out of the depression until much later than we did.

Both of my grandfathers opposed Roosevelt, one of them passionately. My father was a supporter. I myself still find it hard to decide what I think, but there is no getting around his greatness. It is almost hard to believe the extent to which the world we live in today was shaped by him.

"he also gave my state electricity! TVA baby!" listen to yourself. do you even know what TVA stands for? if you don't, then why defend it if you have no idea what it is? I guess you'll side with anything your Socialist Party did. and btw, there's a way to help the poor without government intervention. but you wouldn't know that, wouldn't you, Pinko fuck? You guys should never be trusted with economic recovery. FDR, Truman, Carter, Obama, all tried to bring economic prosperity and failed.

Hate to piss us off? HA! No you don't. That's exactly why you're here, to troll us with your right wing revisionist garbage. And yes, he did slow down the recovery... for the rich, in exchange for long term economic stability (which Clinton and republican congress undid with the repeal of Glass Steagall) and a helping hand for the poor in this country. But oh yeah, no one on your side of the isle gives a flying fuck about the poor do you? He also gave my home state electricity! TVA baby!
