Hector Berlioz
Damnation of Faust
Dramatic legend in four parts after Goethe's "Faust"
Peasants' Rondo-Dance (scene 2), The King of Thule (scene 11), and Mephitopheles's Serenade (scene12).
Jean-Pierre Furlan, tenor (Faust)
Ruxandra Donose, mezzo soprano (Marguerite)
Sir Willard White, bass-baritone (mephistopheles)
Nikikai Chorus Group
NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo
Conducted by Charles Dutoit
This performance improves as it goes along - the Hungarian March was very uninspiring, however Ruxandra Donose is excellent and Charles Dutoit seems to be getting back to his usual high standards. I think Willard White is disappointing, maybe this music does not suit him. Jean-Pierr Furlan, very good.

No it's not the wonderful Suntory Hall. Don't know where or when this was recorded I'd guess about 10 years ago. Dutoit is possibly the best interpreter of Berlioz today his recording of Les Troyens is outstanding although the singers are not the best.
