What is THIS!?!?! Something from another planet? Just wait until they open up! They look weird enough when you find them in the wilderness, but things get even stranger a week later - they open up as shown in the video all by themselves, about 6-7 days after ripening! Are there some face-huggers lurking around? Freaky! See it open in time lapse here:

This is a fun little mock-horror video that shows just one of the interesting things I've run across while out in the field. The plant is actually "Wild Cucumber" (Marah macrocarpus), an indigenous southern California tuber/vine, which is also known as "Man-Root" because its root is said to be really big and shaped like a partially curled-up mummy! Weird! It's poisonous and not edible, but is a fairly common plant in the wet, shady places of Santa Clarita's nearby mountain areas.
The soundtrack is "The Alien Seeds Theme" from the "TimeShift" CD by Technician (yours truly), album and single track available on iTunes: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/timeshift/id416810514 full artist discography and CDs available at HTTP://technician.jcmdi.com
Hope you had fun watching!
