Superman-The Movie first premiered in over 500 U.S. theaters on December 15, 1978, with a running time of 144 minutes. Since that time, different editions have been released on home video and television with various running times, the longest "official" release to consumers being the expanded 152-minute Special Edition DVD in 2001. This restoration project-- officially entitled, Superman-The Movie: Restored International Cut, hopes to combine all of the available extended footage from the different television cuts from around the world to make the longest running, uninterrupted "definitive" cut. • I've always found that last shot, of all the glowing-robed Kryptonians falling into oblivion together, to be one of the most eerie and genuinely effective effects moments of its era. Sure, the SFX from Superman can't hold a candle to, say, Star Wars or Star Trek: The Motion Picture, both films from the same period, but managing to effectively convey the incredibly disturbing concept of the violent death of an entire civilization and all its people in one image is quite the achievement for 1978.

  • the best planet destruction scene in movie history!!!!!!!!!

  • @jorchs83 I always thought they were running to a higher vantage point so they can see their son got away safely. They never made it :(

  • @DarthFastidious Agreed, this was at a time when SFX were part of the story and constructed by highly skilled craftsmen unlike now, where any half decent nerd thinks they can do it just as well. As proven by the Star Wars prequels, Indiana Jones etc, they cant.

  • If Jor-el and Lara know Kyrpton is doomed why are they running? Where can they flee? They know they can't get away, so why run?

  • earth next.

  • Amazing! :O

  • @TalesOfKrypton This scene is almost like a disaster movie within a superhero movie (which is Ironic since John Williams scored about 4 or 5 disaster movies)

  • Perfect. The seventies were a great era of film.

  • I like the way Jor-el and his wife are fleeing, fighting for their lives... they know that they've no chance of survival, yet they do not give it up. -The trade mark of super heroes.

  • How can you not include the explosion????
