In New Zealand, 60% of bike accidents are due to the rider losing control ALL BY HIMSELF - no other cars involved. I am sure that in other countries, it will be similar stats. Part of teh problem is that counter steering is NOT explained very carefully to everyone before they get their license. Without knowledge of it, new riders have the same control as trying to steer a car with a shiftng spanner instead of a steering wheel....

Is there some reason this video isn't working? It's just a still image of the bike.

@solveroftruth I agree- there is a lot of bullshit flying around. When in doubt, turn to science. You will get an answer, and it will be the truth, using applied mathematics.
Two accidents, a lot of experimentation, and a crap load of reading later, I have gone that route, and I now know. Countersteering is the ONLY way to steer effectively. End of story. I am telling any newbies on this forum, if you are starting to ride, if you dont know how to countersteer, you're in MORTAL danger.

@leatherwings007 Mate, when the bike and rider are in equilibrium, going in a straght line, and the rider shifts weight, his weight is counterbalanced by the bike moving the opposiete way. He cannot help it. The entre system moves to stay in equilibrium. The rider is not trying to stitch the experiment - there can be no other outcome of his weight shift. That is teh whole point - weight shift does NOT cause a change in direction (well, not much).
The reason you can lean a bike no hands is because you cause the handle bars to countersteer as you would with hands on the bars.
If he welded the bars fixed straight, then the bike wouldn't turn at all.

In his new DVD they have a pointer coming back from the steering head to a scale on the gas tank. Even when you turn without hands on the bars it shows the front automatically countersteering. The lessons from his book and DVD have made a difference in my riding. Keith has trained more people than anyone and has a lot of experience to back up what he teaches
