Lucy gives a powerful dramatic performance in "First Night" (part 1) of this 1976 TV special. During her monologue "Catherine" talks to a picture of "Ben" but it seems more like Lucy talking to Desi.
In my opinion, the first 20 minutes of this special are some of the best, if not the best, acting of Miss Ball's career. In interviews she always said that early on in her career she would loved to have been 'typed' but she never was until "I Love Lucy" came along. And even though she loved playing the "Lucy" character, I just wish that later on in her career she'd done more work along the lines of "Catherine Curtis", because she was an amazingly gifted dramatic actress. Absolutely peerless!
It's too bad our Lucy didn't get to do more dramatic work. You have to be good at drama to be great at comedy.
