I'm from Britain, and am here to clarify a little issue here:

It refers from when Britain controlled America's industry and Ports, and the Americans revolted and booted us out. The British were known to the Americans as Redcoats, because simply of the colour of the uniforms they wore.

The British uniform included pale stone / beige trousers and a RED Coatee.
