This is a bell from Tong in Bradford, a ring of six which was previously hung from canons on wooden headstocks.

Canon retaining headstocks have been fitted to all six bells and because of the varied dynamics of bells with canon retaining headstocks, the swing times are checked on each bell to ensure the dynamics of the ring as a whole are correct, to ensure that they can be rung easily.

The headstock sits against a resin pad, which is cast onto the top of the bell and drilled through (hence the skirf falling out of the top of the headstock when the bel is first swung).

After this the swing time of the clapper was measured and recorded too. After this has been done for all six of the Tong bells, some clever mathematics will be done to see if they all swing at the right speed.

Tong are at present being rehung in the reconstituted Warner frame. The back five were cast by Edward Seller II in 1730.
In common with previous bells from the York foundry Edward II gives bells fine, decorative inscriptions with floral stamps, and backwards Ns.

  • ...and sadly, the bell is retuned... :-/

  • @Engerlingraucher For a better sound as a set

  • What have the six come out like, Kibby? Cannon Dey was very receptive to me arranging a look with the DAC advisor to bring the bells back into use (that is what prompted this rehanging after several other aborted attempts by others). Louise Bland said it wasn't possible to do this and that, then she changed her mind and taught them a band and has overseen the project. Great Mitton next for a big rehang, but that could be 3 years away...

  • @fartwell2000 I have no idea how they've turned out, as the others were sat on the floor and I was only around when they tested this one. I did however give them a bit of hammer when I saw them last month waiting tuning...... they needed some work!

  • timmeh1507 mainly because I camera in my hand, but then I decided to actually put the video onto YT as it shows the practical use of the testing stand.

  • Nice! Sounds very smooth with its sixth-profile.

  • I am a ringer in Bradford/Halifax where Tong is, I hope to be ringing there soon!

  • @irkibby Not to worry, thanks for posting the video. The back five are listed and the Treble of the six is alledged to have been ordered for another Church, but found it's way to Tong so the legend goes.

    GTFU...

  • Interesting!

  • Very nice. Did you film this for the bell in particular, or other factors?
