  • How do you get dosbox to record CM-32L?

I've had it connected to line-in and just recorded it separately and combined the tracks but if there is a better way I'd be interested to know because this way can have video sync issues...

  • Yep that's how I did it. Dosbox will only record audio that is generated by a program running inside dosbox. Since the synh is external then all you can do is what you said. Sync is a bit of an issue but you can get it fairly close without too much effort.

  • Interesting, however, I was recently playing around in the settings of some of my old DOS games in DOSBOX (particularly I was seeing how some sounded in general Midi, having always used soundblaster music)

I noticed that some games (specifically X-WIng and Tie Fighter, I have the DOS PC versions) had Roland lised in the music sound card selections in set up. And DOSBOX sucessfully emulated that suound set-up! (and sounded similar to this)

Would this setting be for the MT-32?

  • Yes, but only if you have the external hardware sythesyzer available and connected. Something like a MT-32 or a CM-32L.

  • I checked it out and Dosbox will "emulate" music for games with MT-32 selected, but it's just an imperfect conversion to general MIDI, and usually sounds a little off, sometimes way off. (as with Wing Commander)

  • The MT-32 is different to a lot of synths in that it can have instruments replaced by uploading new samples. A lot of Sierra games did this to create sound effects. That's the reason that it sometimes sounds way off, as General MIDI synths can't be reprogrammed in this fashion.

  • Man, THIS is what the MT-32 sounded like? Holy crap. Man, AdLib was NO match. (Also I found this because I had the Silpheed music stuck in my head for no reason)

  • Odd question Orion, is there any chance I could sweet talk you into uploading the music from when you end the game? Its the one thats played over a crescent moon as the credits roll. you dont have to beat the game to get to it, just die a lot like I used to at this game. :)

  • "WE NEED A PILOT...CAN YOU COMPLETE THIS MISSION?"

Due to my SHMUP ineptitude, i found the answer to be a resounding "No". >.>

Quite a fun game otherwise, though.

  • I never played this game, but listening to it on YT made it my second favorite intro music right after the Original Monkey Island theme. The MT-32 kicks so much ass!

  • "Silpheed Super Dogfighter - At maximum ability the most dangerous"

    I love Engrish.

  • Wow, even by today's standards, this is really, really decent quality. The tune itself is really cool, too.

  • @1337Shockwav3 I have to say that the general in-game is actually quite good on the MFC, even though the flute is WAY too loud in the intro. I mean, I have to move the earphones centimeters away from my ears in order to not get ear-damage.

What really seperated the IBM MFC and the LAPC-I is that the LAPC-I had an additional BOSS Reverb-generator built in, and of course it's drum selection. However, where the LAPC-I lacks capabilities (especially in the bass register); the MFC shines through.

  • EPIC WIN!

Game developers have lost their creativity.

  • Man, this sounds quite awesome compared to the IBM Music Feature Card (which is actually a Yamaha FB-01 on a 33cm long ISA card [also not emulated by DOSBox]), even tho it has almost 3 times as many possible instruments than the MT-32/CM-32L

  • This was the first game i ever played on a computer. It came with my IBM PS/1 286 and i was 9 years old =) It really conditioned my later gaming taste...

  • does the game support GM MIDI?...

  • Mt32 is still fuckin' funtastic even in 2010. Respect for Roland. O_O
