  • @ok1jwc Oh, people were just as idiotic and rude back then too, but it wasn't considered polite or well-mannered to show it. That's why you don't see any multiculturalism, no racial diversity, and a program dedicated to teaching women about their "important career as Mrs. _________"

If it looks as though the times were different (in terms of morality, amount of hard work, etc), it's because... well... the advertising got to you.

  • The five pound potty! I've been trying for years to figure out what the announcer really is saying. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

  • Supposedly, the "five pound party" was a sort of baby shower type of event, but for girls who were about to get married. The idea was that the other ladies would get together and bring five pounds of sugar, five pounds of coffee, five pounds of flour, etc. so that the bride in question could start her kitchen.

This is my favorite Joel moment. He cracks up!

  • "But Kay was out of line with student teaching"

"Now let's see, 30 grams to an ounce...is this raw or refined"

"HOME ECONOMICS, starring Efrem Zimbalist, Jr."

"Is it for all time, this feeling of joy?"

"She had to steal from every grocery store in town, as part of her hazing"

"Oh, no! You put the laundry in the composting toilet!"

    "Meeting with Helen Gurley Brown"

"And to re-enact the last scene form ANNA KARENINA"

  • "And you really got slammed and apologized all day Monday"

"And for medium-sized kids, go to a middle school"

"Plenty of butter, pile it on...good hospital food"

    "And her fat brother-in-law"

    "She makes tar heroin"

    (stay tuned for senior year)

  • @hollyhuffstutler I think that either it was basic babysitting, or the house they shared was also occupied by a faculty member with a family.

  • @Nezbitt Just suggesting that a woman might go to college and learn to do something in the world before marriage and motherhood is somewhat bold. In real life, female enrollment in college fell in the 50's, as girls married upon high school graduation or dropped out after "earning their M.rS. degree"--landing a husband. Meanwhile, "experts" discussed why women should even BOTHER going to college, lest they end up over-educated, discontented housewives.

  • @Dablkwid0w2008 My mom told me that some school and community events used to give them out as a sort of souvenir/program.
