Earlier when he was young his sound was so much darker. I heard him teach a master class on you tube and got the impression he prefers a bright sound. Maybe that's why he doesn't seem to have the richness to his voice here. Great actor and intelligent but I prefer a darker sound.
@frankmaiorana66 I know exactly what you mean by "enigma." On the one hand his sound is the very essence of Iago (i.e. "poisonous"); on the other hand it's nothing like a Verdi baritone so it sounds odd in the music.
Sergei Leiferkus is an enigma to me. I have seen this production and he is a brilliant actor. He sometimes does not even sound like an opera singer, much less a baritone. I much prefer a Sherrill Milnes, a Cornell MacNeil, or a Giorgio Zancanaro. That being said, Leiferkus does a good job here. I just prefer my baritones with darker, richer, more sonourus voices, like an Ettore Bastianini or George London had.
