OAKLAND, Calif. - A man has died after being shot just outside the Oakland encampment that anti-Wall Street protesters have occupied for the last month.

Oakland Police Chief Howard Jordan says the victim was pronounced dead at a local hospital Thursday evening, less than two hours after two groups of men got into a fight near the Occupy Oakland camp on a plaza near City Hall.

Jordan says no suspects have been identified. He asked members of the public participating in the protest who may have taken photographs or video that captured the shooting to contact authorities.

The chief says investigators do not yet know if the men in the fight were associated with Occupy Oakland. But protest organizers say they weren't.

The shooting happened just before 5 p.m. on the edge of the plaza outside Oakland City Hill. The Occupy Oakland encampment sits in the middle of the plaza.

Paramedics on the scene were tending the bleeding man, whose condition wasn't immediately known as it was earlier reported. Police were interviewing witnesses and trying to contain a crowd of protesters who had tried to prevent television cameramen from taking video.

A woman from the encampment, Barucha Peller, told CBS station KPIX San Francisco: "The only direct Occupy Oakland involvement was in order to provide emergency first-aid services."

The shooting comes a day after a group of Oakland city and business leaders held a news conference demanding the removal of the encampment, saying that it has hurt downtown businesses and has continued to pose safety concerns.

Many protesters fear police will eventually move forward with another early morning raid to remove them. A tear gas-filled clash between demonstrators and police on Oct. 25 resulted in more than 100 arrests and left an Iraq War vet with a serious brain injury.

Mayor Jean Quan allowed the protesters to return to the encampment the day after that raid. The camp has since grown to about 180 tents.

But tensions and safety concerns have resurfaced in recent says, and on Wednesday, Quan asked members of the camp to show respect to the people of Oakland by peacefully leaving.

Earlier Thursday, a man was shot and killed at the Occupy Burlington protest in Vermont. Fellow protesters indicated that the gunshot appeared to be self-inflicted.

  • This video is labeled wrong. The shooting incident depicted in the video and that happened near the OWS camp in Oakland has NOTHING TO DO with Occupy protesters. You are being manipulated.

  • @teknopwr

No, the investigation cited that the man was from the OWS camp. All the crimes committed (rapes, overdoses, robberies, sexual assaults, suicide, murder, etc) at every OWS site has EVERYTHING to do with the degenerates at these encampments.

Good thing it's pretty much over now. Just hope next time the laws will be enforced sooner so these hippies can't cause as much trouble.

  • It's a huge GOVERMENT conspiracy. The media is only putting up these "smoke screens" to fool you guys and you are falling for it. The OWS protestors are HEROS, Freedom fighters, PAtriots fighting for equality and the goodness of socialism. And islam is a religion of peace, stalin was a kind hearted man and chem trails are making me write this.

  • @Yankeeprepper

Ahaha! I especially like the last sentence. Awesome. Yeah, those chem-trails can really take over your life. I think that pesky Illuminati is behind it. I'm sure I just witnessed a Skull & Bones meeting at my neighbors, too!

There's a lady in the video trying to claim the paramedics are working on a dummy. That's "Leftist conspiracy theorist 101." She's adamant about it. Unfortunately, this was no hoax. The story has been confirmed by the AP and other sources.

  • @TheSelfGoverned If there were any coming out of that mess called OWS! yeah $20 an hour for minimum wage? Get real. That's a good way to close businesses or to drive up costs but the idiot that floated that shit probably flips burgers and thinks that's a fair wage!

  • Hippie haters: you are bunch of fascists. You deserve to live in fucked up country.

Because of hateful people like you we live in fucked up world.

War on drugs is completely wrong and unfair concept. Drug related crimes are not real crimes! People are dying because of weed! Look what is going on in Mexico.

Drugs should be personal choice. Take what u want to take. Everybody has their favorite poison. Nobody should decide which drugs are allowed and which are not. Dont obey unjustified laws.

  • @GravityToy Well, that is the agenda. No one wants brilliant ideas for helping society to be heard.

  • @loveinbalance

The OWS movement isn't about politics? Umm, anti-Capitalism is anti-American. It most definitely is about politics. There aren't many things left that aren't about politics I'm sorry to tell you. Nearly everything we do in a day involves politics. Heck, going to a public bathroom involves politics.

Thanks for the info though. The OWS is winding down now. Most places in other countries as well are cleaning up after the mess left by OWS.

    Take care and God Bless!

  • @YouCruising

I was there that day. Media did try to film the body while the Camp medics were administering care. People locked arms to try to protect this person's space and dignity.

The murder was not over a bag of weed. It was a retaliation over a physical fight and words that were exchanged earlier that day. The killer was not part of that fight, he came with a crew for revenge.

I condemn the senseless act of violence, but please withhold judgement. This isn't about politics.

  • I've been watching a lot of videos and reading tons of verbal feces about the police and the Occupy Oakland s(h)ituation and I have to say that it is amazing how one drug deal gone bad can completely negate all rights to anger about the police presence and will also ensure that nobody who may have been there and actually had a brilliant idea for helping society will ever be heard. Way to go actardivists!

  • shot over a bag of weed? no wonder these idiots aren't apart of the 1%
