I've decided to carry on and do more medleys of recreations.
Using Sibelius 5 and Kontakt Player, I've been trying to recreate some of Murray's brilliant music from Voyage of the Damned. Here's a medley of what I've done. The video includes:

Fix the Shields
Jingle Bells (Welcome to Christmas)
The theme tune (with Derbyshire elements)
A segment of 'The Stowaway' (obviously minus the singing!)
The Doctor Forever (I'm a Time Lord)
Astrid's Theme I
The Doctor Forever (Voyage of the Damned)
Astrid's Theme II
A Titanic Climax
The Stowaway (Instrumental, triumphant)
Astrid's Theme III
I Won't Forget Her (Merry Christmas Mr Copper)

  • "assisted by Ben Foster"

What does he do? Stand next to Murray's piano taking notes?

  • Well, he does do all of the orchestration, which is no mean feat.

  • Not many conductors get the same credit he gets. I don't get it. Murray writes all the memorable music to Doctor Who.

  • No, but he doesn't just conduct. He arranges the music. I know not many people get as much credit as he does, and perhaps they should. And I know Murray writes the memorable music to Doctor Who - that's why it says "assisted" and not "written".

    Happy now? :-)

  • is any of this stuff downloadable, i just love this music! thanks! p.s well done you :D

  • Thanks - glad you like it. Some of the mp3s are downloadable from my website. There should be a link in the description on the right-hand side. :-)

  • Have to disagree with Pirate Bay's assessment of Gold. His work has been stellar since day 1 and is the first soundtrack music since Jerry Goldsmith's work for Star Trek TMP that I can listen to over and over. What Pirate calls remixes, I call musical continuity. Bring on the Series 4 soundtrack CD!

  • Although it sometimes sounds too fairgroundish, you really have copied the music well.

  • Ben Foster is not a legend. Nice guy but not in Murray Gold's league.

Some of the pieces he did or Torchwood with a female singer was him trying to create the same (and better sound) Murray has done with the Doctor. I don't appreciate that.

  • to saskabush2006, I'm glad all the comments on here are nice and non insultive, well. most of them.

I think the music for this series was good, it improved towards the finale, but when Foster Composes. It shows. I just wish Gold would actually start making brand new pieces of Doctor Who muic, becase whenever I listen.. it's always the same pieces used in every episodes, randomly chopped together. Again though that's probably the editors fault, or not. What do i know.

    Just a Foster fan :)

  • I know what u mean i am a viola player and pianist. If u listen to the first series' music it sound naf because it is on all the wrong instruments. But in fairness he was made head judge on bbc young musician. Do you have perfect pitch cos i could never hav done this!!

  • Ah, it's always good to hear some good midis. x3 I envy those who can make them so awesomely. And yes! Murray Gold is pretty awesome.
