Danish National Anthem (Der er et yndigt land)

Denmark is rare in having two separate anthems - one royal (Kong Christian) and one national (this one). I shall record the other one sometime, though out of the two, I much prefer this one.

Recorded on 16 July 2008 at St. John's Parish Church, Ainsdale, Southport.

  • Scandinavian tradition? Any country with a monarchy has a royal anthem.

  • The UK doesn't have a separate royal anthem.

  • i have a question: is the royal anthem performed quite often? or only in some occasions?

  • @Woollylinnet

uk has its royal anthem, but it is the same with its national anthem.

netherland is another case of having the same national and royal anthem..

anyway, in canada, australia, new zealand and other british realms, god save the queen being their royal anthem while they have their own national anthem.

  • I play very well. :) Could you post the Norwegian anthem as well?

  • A question: this video is titled "Danish National Anthem" but gustaaf66 commented in relation to it that "not only Denmark has a ROYAL anthem". Are the terms interchangeable? In Netherlands, Het Wilhelmus can be played and sung anywhere, but not in the presence of foreign dignitaries and ambassadors unless Dutch royals are present.

  • This is the national anthem. "Kong Christian" - which should be on the list of related videos to the right - is the royal anthem.

Gustaaf66's comment was probably referring to my description, where I refer to both.

As for "Het Wilhelmus", it is the only Dutch anthem I am aware of. Perhaps, like "God Save The Queen", it serves both purposes.

  • Right! Thanks for pointing this out to me.

  • Not only Denmark has a royal antehm. Norway and Sweden also have one. Perhaps it's a scandinavian tradition.
